Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 Tour Extension: Postcard Tuscany
Wine Tasting, Visit Medieval Montepulciano & Montalcino
Following a relaxing breakfast, an Italian driver will whisk you away from Spello to the area of Val d’Oricia and sweeping landscapes.
Our first stop is at one of our favorite wineries just outside Montepulciano for a wine tasting from their Tuscan cellar. We will sample several of their wines before going to the heart of Montepulciano for a panoramic lunch featuring handmade pasta, local cheeses, and spectacular views of the endless rolling hills.

Following our tasting, we make our way up into the historic center of Montepulciano for lunch at an authentic Tuscan restaurant offering stunning, sweeping views of the rolling countryside. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at a leisurely pace—wander the town’s elegant Renaissance squares, visit historic underground cellars, or browse local boutiques.
Late in the afternoon, we will drive to the majestic hilltop town of Montalcino, your home base for the next three nights. After checking into our charming hotel, we will come together for a classic welcome dinner paired, naturally, with a bold Brunello di Montalcino wine.

A Tale of Two Hill Towns – Iconic San Gimignano Vs. Untouched Certaldo

Today, we will experience the perfect contrast of Tuscan history: the world-renowned, UNESCO World Heritage site of San Gimignano with its legendary medieval skyline. We will then visit the quiet, untouched Tuscan town of Certaldo Alto. This town is an authentic hidden gem -- close to San Gimignano -- but off the beaten path.
We will leave a bit earlier today to try to avoid the tourist crowds that arrive in San Gimignano each day.
After breakfast overlooking the beautiful Tuscan valley, we take a scenic drive through vineyards and olive groves to visit these two legendary Tuscan towns.
We will first explore San Gimignano, one of the most intact medieval towns in Europe. It is famous for its striking skyline of towering stone homes. Often called the "Medieval Manhattan," it originally featured 72 historic tower houses built by rival wealthy families, 14 of which still survive today.
Enclosed by 13th-century walls, San Gimignano is also celebrated for its winding cobblestone streets, saffron crops, and Vernaccia white wine.
To experience the "real" non-touristy Italy, we will then travel to the serene, historic hilltown of Certaldo Alto.
This captivating medieval walled town, perched atop a hill, is renowned for its distinctive red-brick architecture and charming narrow alleys. As the birthplace and final resting place of the famous 14th-century writer Giovanni Boccaccio, it serves as a rich cultural hub that feels frozen in time.
This quiet, unaltered medieval treasure is highly rated on our Tuscany tours for seniors because it allows our guests to comfortably immerse themselves in local culture without the typical tourist crowds. When we arrive, we will have an unhurried lunch and then explore the town. You will be able to enjoy a view of the valley and the towers of San Gimignano in the distance.
After a relaxing day sightseeing, we will return to Montalcino for dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants.

Renaissance Perfection, Pecorino, and a Gala Farewell
After a quiet morning, we will take a short drive to Pienza, an architectural masterpiece founded over 500 years ago. One of our favorite expert guides will lead us on an insightful walking tour of the town's historic piazzas and palaces.
Before lunch, we’ll enjoy a tasting of Pienza’s famous artisanal pecorino cheese, followed by a delicious lunch right in the heart of the town.
The afternoon is reserved entirely for you to enjoy at your leisure—shop for local textiles, relax at a sidewalk café, or explore Montalcino’s majestic castle at your own pace. For our grand finale, we will treat you to a classic gala farewell dinner featuring the very best of Central Italy's culinary traditions.
Included: All meals, beverages, local transportation in Italy, airport transfers, accommodations, wine tastings, tour guides, and museum entrance fees.
